What a 5 minutes test does and does not tell you

It demands concentration, and most people score several WPM below their one-minute result. That gap is normal and is not a sign of a problem.

  • Expect a lower number than your 1-minute test. The gap between them is your stamina, and it narrows with practice.
  • This is the most useful length if you are preparing for transcription, data entry or any job where typing is the job.

What one mistake and one pause cost in 5 minutes

A typing score is an average over a sample, and the length of the test is the size of that sample. At 50 WPM, 5 minutes is about 1250 characters. One wrong keystroke therefore moves your accuracy by 0.08 points, and a single one-second hesitation removes 0.17 WPM from the result. Over fifteen seconds the same slip would cost 1.6 points and the same pause 3.3 WPM — the reason a five-minute result is the hardest to get lucky on and the most trustworthy.

Calculated with the formulas on the methodology page: WPM counts correct characters divided by five per minute, and accuracy counts every keystroke, so a corrected error still counts against it.

How to practise with a 5 minutes test

  1. Treat it as a weekly benchmark rather than daily practice. It is tiring, and practice done tired rehearses tired habits.
  2. Look at the gap between this score and your 1-minute median. Watching that gap shrink is the most direct measure of stamina you can get.
  3. If you are preparing for transcription or data entry, take it with a short break of normal work beforehand, so the test reflects a working state rather than a fresh one.
