WPM calculator: understand your typing speed

WPM means words per minute. Typometer treats five characters, including spaces, as one word unit. The character count you use matters: raw speed and correct output answer different questions.

Calculate a result step by step

  1. Choose the character count: all character keystrokes for raw WPM, or characters left correct for Typometer's WPM.
  2. Divide that count by five.
  3. Convert seconds to minutes by dividing by 60, then divide the word units by those minutes.
  4. Read accuracy separately. Here it is correct character keystrokes divided by total character keystrokes.

Raw WPM  = (character keystrokes / 5) / minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes / total keystrokes x 100

Example without edits: 250 character keystrokes in 60 seconds, with 240 correct and 10 wrong, gives 50 raw WPM, 48 WPM and 96% accuracy. The calculator treats its error input as incorrect characters within the amount entered. An edited session needs the separate keystroke and finished-text counts described in our scoring methodology.

What do 30, 40, 60 or 80 WPM mean?

These numbers describe a rate, not a certificate or a typing technique. The table is a conversion, not an adult-average or employment-standard table.

A job may require a particular speed, duration and error allowance. Read its current official notice rather than treating an internet speed range as a hiring rule. Our typing requirements guide explains what to check. A website cannot determine whether you looked down or used particular fingers from your WPM.

Why one universal average is misleading

An average belongs to a particular sample and task. For example, the CHI 2018 study Observations on Typing from 136 Million Keystrokes studied volunteers taking an online test. That does not automatically make its sample an estimate for every adult, country, age group or keyboard. We do not present Typometer's uncollected visitor data as research.

Your own comparisons also need context. Use the same input method, layout, text difficulty and duration. A touchscreen result and a physical-keyboard result measure different input methods. A repeated passage adds familiarity; a fresh passage checks a different aspect of practice.

Accuracy and output need separate attention

A higher accuracy percentage does not always mean more correct output. In a simplified no-edit example, 50 raw WPM at 95% accuracy is 47.5 correct-character WPM. At 60 raw WPM and 80% accuracy, it is 48. The first attempt is more accurate; the second has slightly higher correct output. Real editing changes the counts, so neither percentage alone tells the whole story.

Backspacing can leave a correct final character after earlier wrong keystrokes. That is why Typometer keeps keystroke accuracy separate from final-text correctness, and why multiplying two displayed rounded scores is not a general way to reconstruct an edited session.

Choose one useful next step

If you pause over a key, practise that key in a short exercise. If you lose your place in a paragraph, use sentence practice. If the numbers differ across sites, check the scoring definitions before assuming one result is wrong. Questions about WPM

What does WPM stand for?

Words per minute. Typometer uses five-character units, including spaces, rather than counting space-separated words. Divide the relevant character count by five, then divide by elapsed minutes.

Is 40 WPM good?

It depends on your task, accuracy, text and test length. There is no single adult average established for every typing test and population. A 40 WPM result is a useful baseline when you repeat a similar task under similar conditions; it is not a diagnosis of your typing method.

Is 60 WPM enough for a job?

Check the current employer or recruiting authority's notice, including duration, language, accuracy and scoring rules. A practice score cannot establish eligibility or replace a required assessment. There is no universal professional WPM threshold.

Does Backspace restore accuracy?

Not on Typometer. Correcting repairs the finished text, which can affect correct-character WPM, but keystroke accuracy retains mistakes. Raw WPM includes character keystrokes, including mistaken characters; Backspace is counted separately.

How do I convert CPM to WPM?

Divide characters per minute by five. For example, 300 CPM is 60 WPM when both numbers use the same character-count and error rules. Keystrokes per hour can be divided by 60 for keystrokes per minute, but a job's definition of a keystroke may differ.

How should I improve my score?

Choose one recurring difficulty, practise it in a short session, then check whether it appears less often in fresh text. Use similar test conditions for comparisons. No fixed number of days, minutes or weeks guarantees a particular WPM gain.
