About Typometer

Typometer is a free typing course of 415 levels, running from finding the F key without looking, through words, sentences, punctuation, numbers and symbols, to code and professional documents. There is also a free typing test if you only want a measurement.

Most typing sites measure you. This one tries to diagnose you. At the end of an exercise you get more than an error count: which characters you confuse with which, which finger is least accurate, whether you hesitate before punctuation, and whether your accuracy falls apart above a certain speed.

Accuracy is also measured honestly. Fixing a mistake with backspace repairs the text but not the score — an accuracy figure you could rescue by correcting would reward heavy backspacing and hide the weakness worth training.

It cannot tell which finger you actually used. A browser reports which character arrived, not which finger pressed it, so no website can detect this without a camera. What this site does instead is teach the correct finger, show it clearly, and — in the beginner levels — refuse to move on until the correct key is pressed.

It also cannot promise you a particular speed. Typing improves with consistent practice, and how fast that happens varies a great deal between people.

Accounts and saved progress, the adventure mode, typing games, boss challenges, and teacher tools for classes are all in development. Nothing on the site pretends to work before it does: sections that are not ready are marked as such rather than linked to.

Today, progress is not saved between visits. That is the next thing being fixed.

A word is five characters, the standard used by typing assessments. Speed is (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes, and accuracy is correct keystrokes as a share of all keystrokes. The clock starts on your first keystroke, never when the page loads, so a slow connection never costs you time. The typing test page explains this in full.
