3-Minute Typing Test
Three minutes is a common length for formal and employment typing assessments. It is long enough that technique, not luck, decides the result.

What a 3 minutes test does and does not tell you
Fatigue and concentration start to matter here, so a poor score can reflect a bad day rather than a lack of skill. Repeat it before drawing conclusions.
- Sit properly and keep your wrists off the desk. Posture stops mattering in 15 seconds and matters a lot by minute three.
- If your accuracy falls away near the end, practise at a slightly slower pace for longer, rather than practising faster for shorter.
What one mistake and one pause cost in 3 minutes
A typing score is an average over a sample, and the length of the test is the size of that sample. At 50 WPM, 3 minutes is about 750 characters. One wrong keystroke therefore moves your accuracy by 0.13 points, and a single one-second hesitation removes 0.28 WPM from the result. Over five minutes the same slip costs 0.08 points and the same pause 0.17 WPM, which is why longer tests are steadier and harder to get lucky on.
| Your speed | Characters typed | One error costs | A 1-second pause costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 WPM | 450 | 0.22 accuracy points | 0.17 WPM |
| 50 WPM | 750 | 0.13 accuracy points | 0.28 WPM |
| 70 WPM | 1050 | 0.10 accuracy points | 0.39 WPM |
Calculated with the formulas on the methodology page: WPM counts correct characters divided by five per minute, and accuracy counts every keystroke, so a corrected error still counts against it.
How to practise with a 3 minutes test
- Prepare for an assessment by taking this test at the same time of day as the real one, seated as you will be on the day.
- Do not practise only this length. Two short sessions of 1-minute tests and one 3-minute run a day builds speed and stamina faster than repeated 3-minute runs.
- Check consistency as well as speed. A consistency figure that holds steady between your 1-minute and 3-minute results means your rhythm survives fatigue, which is what formal tests reward.

Once you know your speed, the useful next step is finding out which keys are costing you time.
Turn the score into progress
A timed result is only useful if something changes afterwards.
