Typing test for government jobs
SSC CHSL asks for 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi for LDC and JSA posts, over a 10 minute test. SSC describes those as roughly 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour. Data Entry Operator posts are higher, with published requirements of 8,000 or 15,000 key depressions per hour depending on the department. The test is qualifying, which means failing it discards the written marks you have already earned.
Check your own notification. These requirements differ by post and change between cycles. Every figure on this page should be confirmed against the official notification PDF for the exam you are sitting, published at ssc.gov.in. This site is not affiliated with SSC or any government body.
Typing speed requirements by post
| Post | Speed | Approx. KDPH | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| LDC / JSA (English) | 35 WPM | 10,500 | 10 minutes |
| LDC / JSA (Hindi) | 30 WPM | 9,000 | 10 minutes |
| DEO (some ministries) | — | 8,000 | 15 minutes |
| DEO Grade A | — | 15,000 | 15 minutes |
As published in recent notifications. Post-specific variants exist, and the notification for your cycle overrides anything here.
Practise at the real length
Set the test to 10 minutes and use mixed records. A ten minute test is a stamina problem as much as a speed one, and being comfortably above the threshold in minute one tells you very little about minute eight. Paste is blocked here as it is in a real skill test.

Why candidates fail a qualifying typing test
Rarely because they are slow. Much more often because of the rules around the speed, which are easy to skip past when reading a notification.
- Practising in one minute bursts, then meeting a ten minute passage for the first time in the exam hall.
- Practising with backspace, when the real test may disable it entirely and count every error permanently.
- Treating a qualifying test as low stakes. It carries no marks, but failing it discards the marks already earned.
- Choosing Hindi medium at application and then practising on an English layout, which trains the wrong fingers completely.
- Chasing speed past the error cap, when the errors are what eliminate candidates.
A note on Hindi medium, stated plainly
This site cannot prepare you for a Hindi typing test, and we would rather say so than take the visit. Hindi medium tests use the Kruti Dev or Mangal Inscript layouts, which place Devanagari characters on the keyboard in an arrangement this site does not teach or draw. Practising English here will make you a better typist in general, and it will not put the right muscle memory in your fingers for a Devanagari layout.
If you have already chosen Hindi medium on your application, use software built for that layout. If you have not applied yet, choose the medium you can genuinely practise between now and the test, because the medium cannot be changed at the test centre.
Build the speed first
If you are below the threshold rather than near it, a test will not fix that. The course teaches the keyboard one key at a time and names the correct finger for each, and the weakness analysis after a test tells you which specific keys are costing you the time.
Questions about government typing tests
What typing speed is required for SSC CHSL?
For LDC and JSA posts, SSC specifies 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi, which it describes as roughly 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour. The test runs for 10 minutes, with longer allowed for candidates with disabilities. Confirm the figure in the notification for your own cycle, because the details vary by post.
How many key depressions per hour are needed for a DEO post?
Data Entry Operator requirements are higher and depend on the department. Published requirements include 8,000 key depressions per hour for some ministries and 15,000 for DEO Grade A posts, tested over 15 minutes. The exact figure is stated in each notification, and it is the one that counts.
Is the SSC typing test qualifying or does it add to my marks?
It is qualifying only, meaning it does not add to your merit score. That is easy to misread as low stakes. It is the opposite: the marks you earned in the written papers are what you lose if you fail it, so a candidate who has done the hard part can be eliminated by the part they assumed did not matter.
Can I practise the Hindi typing test here?
No, and it would be misleading to suggest otherwise. Hindi medium tests use the Kruti Dev or Mangal Inscript layouts, which map Devanagari characters onto the keyboard in a way this site does not teach. Practising English here will improve your general typing, but it will not prepare your fingers for a Hindi layout. Use software built for that layout instead.
Can I change my typing medium on the exam day?
No. English or Hindi is chosen when you submit the application, and it cannot be switched at the test centre. This catches people out every cycle, so decide at application time based on which layout you can actually practise between now and the test.
How should I practise for a government typing test?
Practise at the full length of the real test rather than in one minute bursts. A ten minute test is a stamina problem as much as a speed one, and a candidate comfortably above the threshold at minute one can drop below it by minute eight. Practise with backspace discipline too, since some tests disable it entirely.
