Stage

Warm up. A friendly first run. Build accuracy before you chase speed.

How to play the falling-letter typing game

  1. Start a round and watch the letters falling toward the bottom of the play area.
  2. Press the matching key to catch a letter before it lands. Read the next target rather than repeatedly pressing the same key.
  3. Use the result to spot keys you keep missing. When you arrive from a lesson, the game can practise the keys from that lesson.

Start with a comfortable stage. Finding a key accurately is more useful than guessing quickly and repeating the same mistake.

Next, try Memory Keys, browse all free typing games, or use untimed typing practice to work on troublesome characters.

What this game trains

Single-key recognition under time pressure. Letters fall one at a time, so there is no word to read ahead of and nothing to guess from context — you either know where the key is or you hunt for it. That makes it the most direct test on the site of whether a key has become automatic, which is why it is offered after an early lesson rather than a late one.

Who it suits

Anyone still looking down for individual letters, and anyone who has just learned a new key and wants to find out whether it stuck. If you can already type whole words without thinking, the word games will stretch you more.

Common questions

Why do I miss letters I know perfectly well?

Almost always because you are watching the letter rather than reading the next one. The gap between recognising a character and pressing its key is where the time goes, and it closes only when your eyes have already moved on. Try deliberately looking at the letter above the one you are typing.

Should I play this at a harder stage to improve faster?

Not until you are clearing the current one above 90% accuracy. A stage fast enough to force guessing teaches guessing. The ladder rises in small steps for that reason, and the stage you can hold cleanly is the one that is actually training you.
